Here's the simple version: both Sweet Annie and your cancer medicine, umbralisib (Ukoniq), can be tough on the liver. Umbralisib is already known to raise liver enzymes and cause liver problems in some people, which is why your care team checks bloodwork while you're on it. Adding Sweet Annie, which has its own reports of liver irritation, could in theory stack that stress and make liver trouble more likely.

To be fair, this concern is theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal evidence, so I don't want you to panic. But because liver safety really matters with umbralisib, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before using Sweet Annie. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and report those right away.

About Umbralisib

What Is Umbralisib Used For?

Brand name: Ukoniq

  • Umbralisib is used to treat marginal zone lymphoma (MZL; a slow growing cancer that begins in a type of white blood cells that normally fight infection) in adults whose cancer has returned or did not respond to a certain type of medication. It is also used to treat follicular lymphoma (FL; a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells) in adults whose cancer has returned or did not respond to at least three other medications. Umbralisib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps stop the spread of cancer cells.
