Oral Drugs
Why this applies to Barium Sulfate
Barium Sulfate falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.
Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
Here's the good news: this is a pretty minor timing issue, not a dangerous combination. Barium sulfate is a contrast agent you swallow before an x-ray or CT scan. It isn't absorbed into your body, it just coats your digestive tract so the radiologist can see things clearly. Because of that, it won't change how thyroid hormone works once it's in your system.
The catch is that bulky stuff in your stomach, including barium, can grab onto thyroid hormone and keep your body from soaking it up well if you take them at the same time. So on the day of your imaging test, it's smart to separate your thyroid extract from the barium by a few hours. Honestly, your scan team may already ask you to skip food and pills beforehand. When in doubt, just ask your pharmacist or the imaging staff about timing.

About Thyroid Extract
What is Thyroid Extract?
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Fatigue and low energy
- Weight management
- Sluggish metabolism
- General thyroid support
Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.
