Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other way from what you might expect. It isn't that tamsulosin (Flomax) changes your thyroid extract, but that taking the two together at the same moment can get in the way of how your body soaks up the thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is fussy about absorption, and swallowing other pills alongside it can blunt how much actually gets into your system.

The practical fix is simple timing. Thyroid products are best taken on an empty stomach, and you can wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before taking your tamsulosin or eating. This is a minor, easily managed issue, not a dangerous one. Tamsulosin itself works the same regardless. Just run your daily schedule by your pharmacist so everything is spaced out well.

What Is Tamsulosin Used For?

Brand name: Flomax

Tamsulosin — available as tamsulosin hydrochloride capsules and as the brand Flomax — is approved to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. BPH can make it hard to start urinating, cause a weak stream, or create a frequent urge to go.

Tamsulosin hydrochloride capsules and Flomax are not approved to treat high blood pressure, even though they work on a similar pathway.
