Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other way from what you might expect. It isn't that tipranavir (Aptivus) changes your thyroid extract. Instead, taking other oral pills and supplements close together can get in the way of how your body soaks up the thyroid hormone. When tipranavir and its ritonavir boost share the same swallow window as your thyroid product, absorption of the thyroid hormone can drop a bit.

The good news is this is rated minor, and it's mostly about timing. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your thyroid extract on an empty stomach, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your HIV medicines and food. Don't change either one on your own. Run the timing past your pharmacist or doctor so your thyroid levels and HIV treatment both stay on track.

About Tipranavir

What Is Tipranavir Used For?

Brand name: Aptivus

Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing 36 kg or more who have already tried other HIV medications and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It must always be taken together with ritonavir to work properly.

Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never been treated for HIV before. It works best when combined with other active HIV medications, and a resistance test is usually done first to confirm the virus will respond to it.
