Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's some good news: this particular interaction really doesn't apply to ertapenem (Invanz). The concern on file is about things in your stomach, like food, fiber, calcium, or iron, blocking thyroid hormone from being absorbed. But ertapenem isn't a pill you swallow. It's given as an injection or IV at a clinic or hospital, so it skips your digestive tract entirely. That means thyroid extract won't bind to it or change how well it fights your infection.

The thing to remember is the flip side: if you take an oral thyroid product, keep it separate from food and from any pills or supplements that contain calcium or iron. If you have questions about timing your thyroid supplement, your pharmacist can help you sort it out.

About Ertapenem Injection

What Is Ertapenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Invanz

Ertapenem injection (brand name Invanz) is used to treat moderate to severe infections in adults and children 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without bone infection), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and acute pelvic infections such as postpartum uterine infection, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

In adults only, Invanz is also used to prevent surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it — it will not treat viral infections.
