Telithromycin falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern flows in one direction: your antibiotic can get in the way of your thyroid supplement, not the other way around. Telithromycin (Ketek) is taken by mouth, and like other oral medications and foods, it may bind to or interfere with thyroid hormone in your gut. When that happens, less of the thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) gets absorbed, so you might not feel the full benefit.

The good news is this is a minor, easily managed timing issue. Thyroid products absorb best on an empty stomach, so simply spacing them apart usually solves it. Take your thyroid first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your telithromycin. Your antibiotic course is short, so confirm the best schedule with your pharmacist.

  • Telithromycin is used to treat certain types of pneumonia (an infection of the lungs) that is caused by bacteria. Telithromycin is in a class of medications called ketolide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as telithromycin not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
