Nilutamide falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other way than usual. It is not that nilutamide changes your thyroid extract. Instead, taking the two pills close together can let nilutamide (and the food or minerals around it) get in the way of how your body absorbs the thyroid hormone. When thyroid hormone is not absorbed well, you may notice signs of an underactive thyroid creeping back, like tiredness, feeling cold, weight gain, or sluggishness.

The good news is this is a minor, timing-based issue, and it is easy to manage. Thyroid hormone is best taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before other medicines or food. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist, especially since self-dosing animal thyroid extract is unpredictable to begin with.

What Is Nilutamide Used For?

Brand names: Nilandron, Anandron

Nilutamide tablets are used together with surgical castration (removal of the testicles) to treat metastatic prostate cancer — prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (Stage D2). It is not used alone; it works as part of this combined treatment approach.

For the best results, treatment with nilutamide should begin on the same day as surgical castration, or the day after.
