American hellebore, also known as Veratrum viride, contains alkaloids that can potentially prolong the QT interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG). Combining American hellebore with other drugs that cause QT-prolongation can increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the gist of this one. Telithromycin (Ketek) is one of those antibiotics that can stretch out the heart's electrical cycle, what doctors call QT prolongation. American hellebore can do the very same thing because of its toxic plant alkaloids. When you put two QT-stretching things together, you raise the odds of a dangerous, fast heart rhythm called torsades de pointes, which can cause fainting, a racing or fluttering heartbeat, or worse.

Honestly, American hellebore isn't a safe supplement to begin with, since even small amounts can dangerously drop your heart rate and blood pressure. The evidence here is moderate rather than rock solid, but the risk is serious enough that I'd steer clear. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with telithromycin.

  • Telithromycin is used to treat certain types of pneumonia (an infection of the lungs) that is caused by bacteria. Telithromycin is in a class of medications called ketolide antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as telithromycin not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
