Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the thing to know about pairing minocycline with a thyroid extract: this is really a timing and absorption issue. Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic, and like other drugs in this family it readily binds to minerals such as calcium and iron. Thyroid extract products often carry these same minerals along for the ride, and if the two meet in your stomach, they can grab onto each other and keep your body from soaking up the antibiotic properly.

If less minocycline gets absorbed, you may not get the full strength you need to clear an infection or control acne. The easy fix is spacing them out, usually a few hours apart. Nothing here is dangerous, but check with your pharmacist about the best timing so both work as intended.

About Minocycline

What Is Minocycline Used For?

Brand names: Ximino, Minolira

Oral and intravenous minocycline products treat many serious bacterial infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum and nongonococcal urethritis, plague, cholera, brucellosis, tularemia, and others caused by susceptible organisms. MINOCIN Intravenous is used when oral therapy is not adequate or tolerated.

Extended-release oral minocycline tablets are indicated specifically for inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older — not for treating infections. AMZEEQ (topical foam) treats inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 9 years and older. ZILXI (topical foam) and EMROSI (oral capsule) are indicated for inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults. ARESTIN (oral powder placed by a dental professional) is used alongside scaling and root planing to reduce pocket depth in adult periodontitis.
