Efavirenz falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the simple version: when you swallow your Efavirenz (Sustiva) at the same time as a thyroid extract pill, the thyroid product is the one that may not absorb as well. Efavirenz, like food or other tablets, can physically get in the way of the thyroid hormone in your gut. This isn't really about Efavirenz losing its punch against HIV. It's about your thyroid dose possibly working less reliably.

The good news is this is a minor, easily managed issue. The usual fix is spacing: take your thyroid product on an empty stomach, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before other pills. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract isn't standardized anyway, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist so your real thyroid needs and your HIV regimen are both covered.

What Is Efavirenz Used For?

Brand name: Sustiva

Efavirenz is used to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection. It is always used together with other antiretroviral medicines — never on its own.

It is approved for adults and for children who are at least 3 months old and weigh at least 3.5 kg (about 7.7 lbs). Both the capsule and tablet forms are approved for this use.
