Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the good news: this interaction is really about the thyroid extract, not your blood pressure pill. The concern is that taking other oral medicines too close to thyroid hormone can block the thyroid hormone from being absorbed properly. Your Vaseretic (enalapril plus hydrochlorothiazide) isn't likely to be weakened by the thyroid product, and the thyroid product won't change how well enalapril relaxes your vessels or how the water pill moves fluid out.

To keep the thyroid hormone working its best, it's usually taken on an empty stomach, about 30 to 60 minutes before any food or other pills, including your Vaseretic. Simple spacing usually solves it. Since over-the-counter thyroid extract is unpredictable, please run your full routine by your pharmacist or doctor.

Enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets — sold under brand names including Vaseretic and Enalapril maleate and hydrochlorothiazide — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This combination is not meant as the first treatment tried; it's generally used when a single blood pressure medicine hasn't done the job on its own.

Because this is a fixed-dose combination, your doctor will typically adjust each medicine separately first, then switch you to the combination tablet once the right doses are found.
