Mefloquine falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in the other direction from what you might expect. It is not that mefloquine changes your thyroid extract, it is that taking the two together in your stomach at the same time may let the mefloquine (and other pills or food) get in the way of absorbing your thyroid hormone. When something binds up the thyroid dose, less gets into your body, so you may feel hypothyroid symptoms like tiredness, feeling cold, or sluggishness.

The good news is this is rated minor and is mostly about timing. Thyroid hormone absorbs best on an empty stomach, so simply spacing it well apart from your mefloquine usually solves it. Ask your pharmacist for a clear schedule, and remember real thyroid problems should be managed with prescription medicine.

About Mefloquine

What Is Mefloquine Used For?

Brand name: Lariam

Mefloquine Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat mild to moderate acute malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum (including strains resistant to chloroquine) and Plasmodium vivax. They are also used to prevent malaria infections, including chloroquine-resistant strains of P. falciparum, in people traveling to malaria-endemic areas.

Important note: mefloquine does not eliminate the liver stage of P. vivax, so patients treated for P. vivax malaria usually need an additional medication (such as primaquine) afterward to prevent relapse.
