Here's the thing to know if you take a thyroid extract and your doctor prescribes demeclocycline. Demeclocycline is in a family of antibiotics (the tetracyclines) that loves to grab onto minerals. Since thyroid extract products can contain minerals like calcium or iron, taking the two close together can let them bind up in your gut. When that happens, less of the thyroid hormone gets absorbed, so it may not work as well for you.

This is a well-documented but generally minor issue, and the easy fix is spacing. Separating your thyroid extract and demeclocycline by a few hours usually keeps both working as intended. I'd run your exact timing past your pharmacist or doctor so they can tailor it to your routine.

About Demeclocycline

What Is Demeclocycline Used For?

Brand name: Declomycin

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, tick fevers, respiratory tract infections (including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae), cholera, plague, tularemia, brucellosis, relapsing fever, chancroid, and sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, and gonorrhea (when penicillin cannot be used).

It is also used for certain skin and skin structure infections, bartonellosis, granuloma inguinale, actinomycosis, listeriosis, anthrax (when penicillin is contraindicated), and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis. In severe acne, it may be used as part of combination therapy. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.
