Demeclocycline falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's something worth knowing if you're taking demeclocycline. This antibiotic, like other tetracyclines, is already well known for making your skin more sensitive to sunlight. That means you can sunburn faster than usual, even on a mildly sunny day. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab tests, also seems to make skin more sun-sensitive. So in theory, pairing the two could add up and make a bad sunburn or rash a little more likely.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research, not real patient cases. Eating cilantro as a normal food in your tacos or salsa is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oils are a different story. Either way, use sunscreen and cover up while on demeclocycline, and check with your pharmacist if you have concerns.

About Demeclocycline

What Is Demeclocycline Used For?

Brand name: Declomycin

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride tablets are used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. These include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, tick fevers, respiratory tract infections (including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae), cholera, plague, tularemia, brucellosis, relapsing fever, chancroid, and sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum, nongonococcal urethritis, and gonorrhea (when penicillin cannot be used).

It is also used for certain skin and skin structure infections, bartonellosis, granuloma inguinale, actinomycosis, listeriosis, anthrax (when penicillin is contraindicated), and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis. In severe acne, it may be used as part of combination therapy. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to it.
