Minocycline falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the deal with minocycline and cilantro. Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic, and one of its well-known quirks is that it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may burn faster than usual. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, at least in lab studies, may also add a little sun sensitivity of its own.

The concern is that pairing them could stack that effect and make a sunburn more likely. That said, this is purely theoretical and based on test-tube data, not real patient cases. The amount of cilantro in your food is very unlikely to matter. I'd only think twice about concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil. Either way, just use sunscreen and cover up while on minocycline, and ask your pharmacist if you have questions.

Minocycline also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

In vitro research suggests that extracts of cilantro can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, cilantro might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs. Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's something worth clearing up. The bleeding concern with cilantro on file is really aimed at blood thinners and antiplatelet medicines like aspirin or warfarin. Minocycline isn't one of those drugs. It's an antibiotic in the tetracycline family, so cilantro's mild, lab-only effect on platelets doesn't apply to how minocycline works in your body.

On top of that, this interaction is purely theoretical, based on test-tube studies, not real patients. Eating cilantro as a food alongside your minocycline isn't something I'd lose sleep over. If you're taking a concentrated cilantro supplement or already on a true blood thinner separately, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

About Minocycline

What Is Minocycline Used For?

Brand names: Vectrin, Dynacin, Minocin, Minocin IV, Solodyn, Acnamino MR, Minocin MR, Sebomin MR, Aknemin, Arestin Miscrosperes, Amzeeq, Zilxi

Oral and intravenous minocycline products treat many serious bacterial infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum and nongonococcal urethritis, plague, cholera, brucellosis, tularemia, and others caused by susceptible organisms. MINOCIN Intravenous is used when oral therapy is not adequate or tolerated.

Extended-release oral minocycline tablets are indicated specifically for inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older — not for treating infections. AMZEEQ (topical foam) treats inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 9 years and older. ZILXI (topical foam) and EMROSI (oral capsule) are indicated for inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults. ARESTIN (oral powder placed by a dental professional) is used alongside scaling and root planing to reduce pocket depth in adult periodontitis.
