Cilantro and Interferon Beta-1b

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS

Why this applies to Interferon Beta-1b

Interferon Beta-1b falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with cilantro and your Betaseron (interferon beta-1b) shots. A plant compound in cilantro called coriandrin may, in theory, make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Interferon beta-1b can already cause skin reactions, and sun sensitivity has been reported with it too, so the worry is that the two together could leave you more prone to sunburn or skin irritation, especially at your injection sites.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on lab findings, not real-world reports. Eating cilantro as a food almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are where I'd be a bit more cautious. Either way, good sun protection is smart with this medication. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Interferon Beta-1b page

“If you inject interferon beta-1b (Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia) for multiple sclerosis, this supplement list is one to take seriously, mostly because of your liver. Interferon beta-1b can raise liver enzymes on its own, and 38 of the 57 ingredients on file add their own liver stress on top of that.”

About Cilantro

What is Cilantro?

  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Antimicrobial support
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heavy metal 'detox' (chelation) claims
  • Culinary flavoring

Cilantro is the leafy part of the Coriandrum sativum plant and is widely eaten as a food, where it is considered safe for most people. While it has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in lab studies, strong human evidence for any specific health benefit is lacking, and popular 'detox' claims are not well supported. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil.
