Porfimer falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the thing about Porfimer (Photofrin): it works by making your cells extremely sensitive to light, that's the whole point of this light-activated cancer treatment. After you receive it, your skin and eyes stay very sensitive to bright light and sunlight for weeks, and you're told to stay out of direct sun to avoid serious burns and blistering.

Now, lab studies hint that a compound in cilantro called coriandrin may also boost light sensitivity. In theory, a concentrated cilantro supplement or essential oil could add to that effect. To be honest, this is based on test-tube research, not real patient cases, and normal cilantro in your food is very unlikely to matter. Still, while you're on Porfimer, please run any cilantro supplements past your oncology team first.
