Levofloxacin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist for levofloxacin and cilantro. Levofloxacin already has a known tendency to make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, which can lead to faster sunburns or a rash on exposed areas. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab studies, also appears to make skin react more to light. So in theory, taking both could add up and make you a bit more prone to a sunburn-type reaction.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical, based on lab work rather than real patient reports, and normal amounts of cilantro in food are very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are the bigger question mark. Either way, while on levofloxacin it's smart to use sunscreen and limit direct sun. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

What Is Levofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Levaquin, Levaquin Injection, Leva-pak

Levofloxacin treats bacterial infections in adults, including pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital-acquired), skin infections, urinary tract infections, kidney infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and sinus infections. It is also used after exposure to inhalational anthrax and for plague.

Because levofloxacin carries significant risks, it should only be used for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, and acute bacterial sinusitis when no other treatment option is available. Always use it only for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
