Griseofulvin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the simple version. Griseofulvin, the antifungal you take for things like ringworm or nail infections, already has a tendency to make your skin more sensitive to the sun. That means you can sunburn faster than you'd expect. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab tests, also seems to make skin more sun-sensitive. So putting the two together could, in theory, add up and leave you a bit more prone to burning.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from test-tube research, not real patients, so it's more of a 'just in case' caution. Eating cilantro on your tacos almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are the bigger question mark. While on griseofulvin, use sunscreen and cover up outdoors, and check with your pharmacist before adding cilantro capsules.

About Griseofulvin

What Is Griseofulvin Used For?

Brand names: Fulvicin PG, Fulvicin-U/F, Grisactin Ultra, Grisactin

Griseofulvin treats dermatophyte (ringworm-type) fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails that haven't cleared up with topical (cream or ointment) treatment alone. It is used for tinea corporis (ringworm of the body), tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea barbae (ringworm of the beard area), tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp), and tinea unguium (fungal nail infection).

It only works against specific dermatophyte fungi. Griseofulvin does not treat bacterial infections, yeast infections (candidiasis), or other fungal infections such as histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, or tinea versicolor. A lab test or fungal culture should confirm the infection before treatment starts.
