Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist: desipramine can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster than usual. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab research, also seems to react with light. The thought is that putting the two together might add up and make your skin even quicker to burn.

I'll be honest with you, this one is purely theoretical and based on test-tube studies, not real patients. Eating cilantro in your food is very unlikely to cause any trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are the bigger question mark. Either way, simple sun smarts (sunscreen, a hat, shade) go a long way while you're on desipramine. If you want to use a cilantro supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
