Glyburide falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the connection people don't always realize: glyburide is a sulfonylurea, and as a sulfa-type drug it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. That means easier sunburns or rashes for some folks. A compound in cilantro called coriandrin has shown possible sun-sensitizing effects too, so in theory, pairing the two could add up and leave your skin a little more prone to burning.

I want to be honest with you: this is theoretical, based on lab research, not real patient cases. Eating cilantro in your food almost certainly won't cause a problem. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are a different story, so check with your pharmacist before using those. Either way, good sunscreen and a hat are smart while on glyburide.

What Is Glyburide Used For?

Brand names: Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase, Glycron, Micronized, Glynase PresTab, Albert Glyburide

Glyburide tablets are used alongside diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the body produces dangerous levels of acids called ketones).

Glyburide may be used alone or combined with metformin when metformin alone is not enough. It can also be used to help transition patients who are moving from insulin or other diabetes pills to a new regimen, under a doctor's guidance.
