PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS

Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Losartan Potassium

Hydrochlorothiazide, Losartan Potassium falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Hyzaar (which combines hydrochlorothiazide with losartan). The hydrochlorothiazide piece is already known to make some people more sensitive to sunlight, so they sunburn faster than usual. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab studies only, also seems to make skin more reactive to UV light. Put the two together and, in theory, you could be a bit more prone to a quick sunburn or a rash on sun-exposed skin.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube findings, not real patient reports, and normal food amounts of cilantro are very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated cilantro supplements or the essential oil, just be smart with sunscreen and a hat, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

About Cilantro

What is Cilantro?

  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Antimicrobial support
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heavy metal 'detox' (chelation) claims
  • Culinary flavoring

Cilantro is the leafy part of the Coriandrum sativum plant and is widely eaten as a food, where it is considered safe for most people. While it has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in lab studies, strong human evidence for any specific health benefit is lacking, and popular 'detox' claims are not well supported. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil.
