Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist for cilantro and your losartan (Cozaar). A compound in cilantro called coriandrin has shown photosensitizing effects in lab studies, meaning it might make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Losartan itself can occasionally cause some sun sensitivity too, so the worry is that stacking the two could make you sunburn a little more easily, with redness or a rash after time outdoors.

Honestly, this one is very theoretical and based only on test-tube research, not real patient cases. Eating cilantro in normal food amounts is unlikely to cause any trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are where I'd be a touch more cautious. Either way, simple sun protection (sunscreen, a hat) covers you well. If you notice unusual skin reactions, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Keeping blood pressure under control lowers the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.

It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged heart muscle). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients. Additionally, losartan treats diabetic nephropathy — kidney damage caused by type 2 diabetes — in people who also have high blood pressure.
