Crizotinib falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other direction from what you might expect. It is not that crizotinib (Xalkori) changes how your thyroid extract works in a big way, but that taking these two together at the same time can blunt how well the thyroid hormone is absorbed. Oral pills and food sitting in your stomach can bind up thyroid hormone so less of it gets into your bloodstream. That can leave you feeling sluggish, cold, or tired if your thyroid coverage drops off.

This is rated a minor interaction, and the easy fix is spacing. Thyroid hormone is best taken on an empty stomach, well before other pills. Since crizotinib is a serious cancer medicine with its own timing and side effects, please let your oncologist or pharmacist guide how and when to space these so neither one suffers.

About Crizotinib

What Is Crizotinib Used For?

Brand name: Xalkori

Xalkori (crizotinib) is used to treat adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for the ALK or ROS1 gene abnormality, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Xalkori is also used to treat pediatric patients aged 1 year and older and young adults with relapsed or refractory systemic ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). Additionally, it treats adult and pediatric patients aged 1 year and older with unresectable, recurrent, or refractory ALK-positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). Note: Xalkori's safety and effectiveness in older adults with relapsed or refractory ALK-positive ALCL have not been established.
