Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs the other way from most interactions. It's not that your cancer medicine changes the supplement, it's that Trametinib (Mekinist) and other things in your stomach can lower how much thyroid hormone you absorb. When you swallow a pill alongside thyroid extract, they can compete in your gut, and the thyroid hormone may not be taken up as well. That can leave a thyroid problem undertreated, with symptoms like fatigue, feeling cold, or weight changes.

The good news is this is a minor, timing-related issue, not a dangerous one. Separating your doses (thyroid hormone on an empty stomach, well before other pills) usually solves it. Because thyroid extract amounts aren't standardized, please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before mixing these.

About Trametinib

What Is Trametinib Used For?

Brand name: Mekinist

Mekinist is used to treat cancers that have a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation — a specific genetic change that tells cancer cells to grow out of control. It can be used alone or, more often, paired with another targeted medicine called dabrafenib.

On its own, Mekinist treats certain patients with unresectable (cannot be surgically removed) or metastatic (spread to other parts of the body) melanoma who have not previously received a BRAF inhibitor. In combination with dabrafenib, Mekinist is used for metastatic or surgically treated melanoma, metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), locally advanced or metastatic anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC), certain other BRAF V600E-positive solid tumors in adults and children 1 year and older, and low-grade glioma (a type of brain tumor) in children 1 year and older. A BRAF mutation must be confirmed by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.
