Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the simple version: this is really about timing, not danger. Your thyroid extract is best absorbed on an empty stomach, while other pills or food in your gut can soak up some of the thyroid hormone and weaken it. Your water pill (the amiloride/hydrochlorothiazide combo) is one of those 'other things' that can get in the way if you swallow them at the same moment.

The fix is easy. Take your thyroid extract first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your Moduretic. If they're taken together long-term, you might notice your thyroid symptoms creeping back, like tiredness or feeling cold. Your blood pressure pill still works fine either way. Run your daily routine by your pharmacist so the spacing fits your schedule.

About Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
