Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, using green tea with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Green tea contains caffeine. In excessive amounts, caffeine can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here's the interesting twist with this particular combo. The concern on file is about potassium levels, and that's mostly theoretical, based on the caffeine in green tea. Caffeine in large amounts can nudge potassium down a little. But your medication is a smart pairing: hydrochlorothiazide can lower potassium, while the amiloride part is a potassium-sparing diuretic that helps hold onto it. That's the whole reason these two are combined.

So in practice, normal cups of green tea are very unlikely to cause a problem here. I'd be more mindful of high-dose green tea extract pills or heavy caffeine if you also have kidney concerns. If you ever feel muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
