Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the thing about alendronate: it's already one of the trickiest pills to absorb. Even on a good day, your body only takes in about 1 percent of the dose, which is why you take it on an empty stomach with plain water and stay upright. Tragacanth forms a thick, slippery gel in your stomach, and in theory that gel could coat things and further block the small amount of alendronate you'd normally absorb. Less drug getting in could mean weaker protection for your bones over time.

To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on how the gum behaves rather than real patient studies. Still, since alendronate is so easily thrown off, I'd keep them well apart and run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Alendronate

What Is Alendronate Used For?

Alendronate tablets (including Alendronate, Alendronate Sodium, and Fosamax) are used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, treat osteoporosis in men, treat glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (bone loss caused by long-term steroid use) in men and women, and treat Paget's disease of bone. Binosto effervescent tablet is specifically indicated for treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis.

Alendronate Sodium oral solution is indicated for treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Alendronate helps build bone mass and reduce the risk of fractures, including hip and spinal fractures.
