Here's the simple version: tragacanth is a plant gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel when it hits fluid in your stomach. That gel can physically trap or slow whatever else is sitting in there, which is why it might nudge how much chlorpheniramine your body soaks up. The effect can go either way (a little less, a little more, or no change at all), so it's hard to predict.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not solid human studies, so don't lose sleep over it. If you absorb a touch more, you might notice extra drowsiness or dry mouth; a touch less might mean your allergy symptoms aren't as well controlled. An easy fix is timing: take your chlorpheniramine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

Chlorpheniramine is used to temporarily relieve common allergy symptoms caused by hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or other upper respiratory allergies. These include runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

These uses are supported across multiple products — including tablets (such as Aller-chlor, Allergy, Allergy Relief, Allergy Time, Anti Allergy, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate), extended-release tablets (Allergy Relief and Chlorphen-12), the oral solution Ed Chlorped Jr, and the inhalers ClorRelief and ClorRelief KIDs.
