Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version when we're talking about ethanol (alcohol you'd drink) and tragacanth. Tragacanth is a plant gum that swells into a thick, slippery gel in your stomach. Because of that gel, it can theoretically slow down or change how things you swallow get absorbed, including alcohol. That might mean alcohol enters your bloodstream a little more slowly, or possibly differently than usual. Honestly though, this is a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not something proven in real people.

It's not a dangerous combo, and food-level amounts of tragacanth are unlikely to matter much. If you take concentrated tragacanth supplements, a good habit is to space them about 30 to 60 minutes apart from anything you swallow. Questions? Your pharmacist is happy to help.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
