ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Sodium Bicarbonate (OTC Drug)
Sodium Bicarbonate (OTC Drug) falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: tragacanth is basically a gummy fiber. When it hits liquid in your stomach, it swells into a thick, slippery gel. The concern is that this gel could physically coat or trap whatever else is sitting in your stomach, including a dose of sodium bicarbonate. That might slow down or change how much of the antacid your body actually puts to work, so your heartburn or acid indigestion relief could be a little weaker or less predictable.
I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not something proven in people. An easy fix covers it: take your sodium bicarbonate first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. Food amounts are unlikely to matter much. If you use either regularly, just run it by your pharmacist.
