HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Beet Root by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Beet Root Extract, Dry. Beet root extract is a concentrated form of compounds found naturally in the beet vegetable, including betanin and other plant pigments and nitrates.
The inactive ingredients are alcohol, water, and glycerin — used to preserve and deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Beet root extract shows possibly effective evidence for athletic performance and exercise-induced muscle soreness. For chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the evidence leans toward possibly ineffective.
The data we hold isn't strong enough to rate it for cholesterol management (dyslipidemia) or brain function (cognitive function) — those areas just don't have reliable evidence yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beet as a food is eaten widely and is generally well tolerated. As a concentrated supplement, though, safety data is limited, so use caution — especially long-term.
The most common side effects are harmless: red stools and red urine from the pigments. Rarely, very large amounts could theoretically cause low blood calcium (hypocalcemia) or kidney damage because of beet's oxalate content.
One case report described black stools in an older person taking beet pills alongside blood thinners, though upper GI bleeding was ruled out.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check any medications processed by CYP3A4 enzymes in your liver — this is a large class that includes many heart, cholesterol, and immune drugs. Also check CYP1A2 substrates, which beet may weaken.
If you're on blood pressure medication, mention this supplement since beet contains nitrates that lower blood pressure, though the effect in studies has been modest.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Beet root extract may help with exercise performance and muscle soreness, but it has real interactions with liver-metabolized drugs — especially the 850 medications processed through CYP3A4. If you take any prescription medication, particularly anything for heart rhythm, cholesterol, or blood pressure, check it against our interaction tool before starting.

Beet Root by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Beet Root Extract has documented interactions with a major class of medications that your body processes through the liver — specifically drugs metabolized by an enzyme called CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, beet's main pigment, can inhibit this enzyme in a dose-dependent way similar to the antifungal ketoconazole, which means beet may raise the blood levels of CYP3A4 substrates and potentially cause unwanted effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beet also theoretically induces CYP1A2 enzymes, another liver pathway, which could lower the levels of drugs processed that way. Additionally, because beet contains nitrates that relax blood vessels, it may have additive effects with blood pressure medications, though clinical evidence on this is mixed — one study found no significant impact on blood pressure from concentrated beetroot juice, but the effect isn't fully ruled out.
Altogether, these interactions span 850 individual medications. We could not find safety data to check against other drug types, so run your specific medications through the checker below before you start.

Beet Root Extract, Dry
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Beet and beetroot contain nitrates, which can cause vasodilation, potentially leading to lower blood pressure. However, a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition using concentrated beetroot juice found no significant impact on blood pressure or heart rate in different age groups. Other small clinical studies suggest that while beet consumption might transiently lower blood pressure due to vessel dilation, there's no consistent evidence of a lasting effect. Overall, the theoretical risk of reduced blood pressure due to beet's nitrate content exists, but studies generally indicate a low and temporary impact rather than a sustained decrease.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, beet might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that beet induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
