HelloPharmacist Scorecard of DMAE 100 mg by Bluebonnet
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol), 100 mg per capsule. DMAE is a compound thought to support acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in brain function and muscle control.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, with vegetable magnesium stearate as a binder — these are inert ingredients that make the capsule work.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for DMAE's effectiveness is mixed and limited. It's rated likely ineffective for Alzheimer disease and tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements).
For aging skin, ADHD, and athletic performance, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't. If you're considering DMAE for one of these uses, talk it over with your doctor about whether the current evidence supports a trial.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
DMAE is generally well tolerated by mouth, but side effects do occur. The most common ones reported are abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting.
Less commonly, it's been linked to constipation, headache, insomnia, confusion, and mood changes including depression and hypomania. At higher doses (above 1000 mg daily), mood effects are more likely, and in people with schizophrenia, it may worsen symptoms.
Safety data in pregnancy is not available, and the facts advise against use while breastfeeding due to limited evidence.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on anticholinergic drugs (like antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, or medications for overactive bladder) or cholinergic drugs (like certain glaucoma or Alzheimer medications). DMAE may theoretically change how these work, though the documented risk is Minor.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
DMAE 100 mg is a single-ingredient supplement with limited evidence for most uses and no proven benefit for Alzheimer disease or tardive dyskinesia. It interacts with anticholinergic and cholinergic medications at Minor severity, so you'll want to check your exact prescriptions before starting.
Gastrointestinal side effects and mood changes are possible. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist to see if DMAE fits your situation and medications.
