Extra Care Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Meijer
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Extra Care Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Extra Care Probiotic by Meijer
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Extra Care Probiotic contains ten live bacterial strains—probiotics, or beneficial organisms meant to support gut health. Four of them are Lactobacillus species (salivarius, plantarum, paracasei, acidophilus, bulgaricus, casei, and rhamnosus GG), and three are Bifidobacterium species (breve, longum, and animalis lactis).
These are grouped together in what the label calls a Probiotic Blend. The capsule itself contains inactive ingredients: cellulose, silicon dioxide, gellan gum, and magnesium stearate.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for effectiveness is mixed and depends on the specific condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
However, most of the other strains in this product—Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus—lack sufficient reliable evidence to rate their effectiveness for the conditions studied, including allergic rhinitis, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and asthma. For the remaining three ingredients (Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus casei), we have no effectiveness data on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The checked ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, but caution is advised if you're seriously ill or immunocompromised—in rare cases, these probiotic bacteria have caused bloodstream infections (bacteremia) in critically ill or very young patients. Gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea have been reported with probiotic use, though they're uncommon.
Because safety data are limited overall, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a weakened immune system. Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation, but pregnancy and lactation data are not on file for the other checked ingredients.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, timing matters—separate your antibiotic dose from this probiotic by several hours, since antibiotics can kill the live organisms. No other drug interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or bacterial vaginosis if you take Lactobacillus acidophilus. If you take antibiotics, separate them from this probiotic by several hours—the antibiotic will kill the live organisms.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, very ill, or have a compromised immune system.

Extra Care Probiotic by Meijer Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Extra Care Probiotic by Meijer contains ten probiotic ingredients, of which four have interaction data available.
The product's most serious documented interaction is with antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity): four of the checked ingredients—Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus—may have their effectiveness decreased if taken at the same time as antibiotics, because the antibiotics can kill the live organisms in the probiotic preparation. The fact sheet advises separating the timing of antibiotic and probiotic doses.
