Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the good news: the concern here runs one direction only. Antibiotics like levofloxacin can kill off the live Bifidobacterium breve in your probiotic, making the probiotic less useful. It does not make your antibiotic weaker or cause new side effects. So your infection treatment stays on track, your probiotic just may not deliver its full benefit.

One extra thing worth mentioning: you asked about the eye drop (ophthalmic) form. That version stays mostly in and around the eye, with very little reaching your gut, so it's unlikely to bother your probiotic much at all. If you're taking an oral antibiotic too, spacing your probiotic and antibiotic by at least 2 hours is a smart, simple habit. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

What Is Levofloxacin Used For?

Brand name: Levofloxacin

Levofloxacin treats bacterial infections in adults, including pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital-acquired), skin infections, urinary tract infections, kidney infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and sinus infections. It is also used after exposure to inhalational anthrax and for plague.

Because levofloxacin carries significant risks, it should only be used for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, and acute bacterial sinusitis when no other treatment option is available. Always use it only for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
