Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: galangal root at 450 mg per capsule. Galangal is a spice-like rhizome (underground stem) related to ginger, traditionally used in cooking and herbal medicine.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin and water, which are inactive ingredients that hold the powder together.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for galangal's effectiveness isn't well established in the data we hold. Effectiveness ratings for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mental alertness, minor bleeding, and male infertility all show insufficient reliable evidence.
That means the studies available so far don't give us a clear picture of whether galangal actually works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Galangal is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement-level safety hasn't been thoroughly studied. In one clinical trial, a small number of people taking galangal extract experienced gastrointestinal side effects — about 5% of participants discontinued treatment due to stomach or digestive issues after 12 weeks.
The safety data during pregnancy advises against medicinal amounts — there isn't enough information to know it's safe. The same goes for breastfeeding: lack of safety data means you should avoid galangal supplements while nursing.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Before you start, check with us if you take H2-blockers (like famotidine), antacids, proton pump inhibitors (like omeprazole or pantoprazole), or indomethacin — all Minor severity interactions are documented. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your specific drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Galangal root may be worth considering if you're interested in traditional herbal support, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't clear yet. If you take acid-reducing medications or indomethacin, you'll want to check your exact drugs before starting.
Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it. Ask your pharmacist whether this product fits your health plan.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Galangal Root 450 mg by TerraVita Premium Collection has documented interactions with several medication types used for stomach acid and pain relief.
The most serious concern is with acid-reducing medications: galangal may theoretically increase stomach acid, which could work against H2-blockers (like famotidine), antacids, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs like omeprazole) — all Minor severity interactions.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Galangal may also theoretically reduce the effectiveness of indomethacin (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever). Animal studies suggest galangal speeds up how your body eliminates indomethacin, but this hasn't been confirmed in humans.
If you take any of these medications — acid reducers or indomethacin — check your exact drugs with the search tool on this page before you start. Altogether, these interactions span 37 individual medications.
