What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gentian root glycerite liquid extract, a liquid concentrate made from gentian root. The inactive ingredient is glycerin, which is the base used to preserve and deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold for gentian root doesn't clearly support its use for wound healing, weight loss, sinus inflammation, or stomach irritation — the ratings are all insufficient. That doesn't mean it doesn't work, just that we don't have solid clinical data to back those claims yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gentian root is generally well tolerated in small amounts by healthy adults, but it can upset your stomach. We don't have much data on higher doses, so stick to the label.
In a trial where people took gentian tincture with turmeric and ginger together, some experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloating — though it's unclear how much gentian alone was responsible. Don't use this during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
There isn't enough safety data to know it's okay, and traditional cautions exist, so play it safe and talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) you're taking before starting gentian. Gentian can lower blood pressure, and combined with your medication, it might drop too far.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gentian root may be worth considering if you're exploring traditional digestive support, but it's not well studied for specific conditions. The main caution is blood pressure — if you take any blood pressure medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Stomach upset is possible, especially if you're sensitive to bitter herbs.
