Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body makes naturally and uses for gut health, immune function, and muscle recovery. You're getting 550 mg per capsule.
The capsule itself is made from vegan plant material, with no other inactive fillers.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-Glutamine is rated as effective for sickle cell disease. For other uses—HIV/AIDS-related wasting, recovery after surgery, and critical illness from trauma—the evidence suggests it may help, though more research is needed to be sure.
The data we hold doesn't show effectiveness ratings for other conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral doses are digestive: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under your doctor's supervision.
Rare cases of dizziness, and in people with bipolar disorder, mood changes (mania or hypomania) have been reported at higher doses, but these are uncommon.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take an anticonvulsant (seizure medication), check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this product. Glutamine could theoretically reduce how well your seizure drug works, though this hasn't been confirmed in patients yet.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may be worth considering if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness, though evidence for the latter two is still building. If you take a seizure medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—this supplement could theoretically interfere with how your drug works.
Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to see if it's right for your situation.
