L-Theanine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Theanine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a straight-up single-ingredient product: L-theanine, an amino acid that naturally occurs in tea leaves. It's the one active ingredient, and it comes as a powder with no other fillers or additives listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence here is limited. L-theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function — meaning some data suggests a benefit, but we'd like more.
For everything else we have data on — age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, generalized anxiety, OCD, and cancer — there isn't enough reliable evidence to know if it works. That doesn't mean it doesn't; it just means the research isn't solid enough to say yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, though long-term safety isn't well studied. Side effects can include headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, and more vivid dreams.
There's one old report of facial tics in a child, but the tics went away when the supplement stopped, and the child had a history of tics anyway, so it's not clear theanine caused it. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data, so it's best to avoid it during both.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check your blood pressure medications — theanine could potentiate their effect. Also flag any CNS depressants you're taking (sleep aids, anxiety meds) and any serotonergic drugs, though that last risk is very low and no actual cases have been reported.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-theanine might be worth trying if you're looking for a cognitive edge and you're generally healthy. If you take blood pressure medication or sedating drugs, check with your pharmacist first — theanine could amplify their effects.
Talk to your pharmacist if you're pregnant, nursing, or on any regular medication.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Theanine by BulkSupplements.com interacts with a couple of drug categories worth knowing about before you start.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The main one is blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs). Theanine can lower blood pressure on its own, and animal studies suggest it might strengthen the effect of your BP meds.
If you're on a blood pressure drug, that's worth a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist before you add this in.
Second, there's a theoretical concern with CNS depressants — drugs like sleep aids or anti-anxiety medications. Theanine might pile on the drowsiness, though we're not sure how much this matters in real life.
And while some studies hint theanine could affect serotonin levels, no one's actually reported serotonin syndrome from it, so that risk is pretty low.
Already, these interactions span 563 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to see if anything you take is in the mix.

For each ingredient in L-Theanine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
