HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Theanine by Klaire Labs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in tea. The other ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, the vegetarian capsule itself, ascorbyl palmitate, and silicon dioxide — are excipients used to form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function based on available evidence. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
The evidence for cancer-related uses is also insufficient to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults when used for the short term, but how safe it is over longer periods hasn't been well studied. The most common side effects reported are headaches, drowsiness, increased sleep duration, and more vivid dreams.
One case of a subtle facial tic in a child was reported within 4 days of taking a high dose, but the tic stopped when the supplement was discontinued; the child had a history of tics, so the connection to theanine was unclear. There isn't enough safety data in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid this supplement during those times.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any blood pressure medication — theanine may lower your pressure further. Also mention any central nervous system depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, strong pain relievers) or serotonergic drugs (antidepressants and related medications).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-theanine may help with focus and mental clarity, though the evidence is strongest for cognitive function. If you're on blood pressure medication or take sedatives or antidepressants, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this — the interactions aren't common problems, but they're worth discussing.
For short-term use in otherwise healthy adults, it's generally well tolerated, though headaches and drowsiness can happen.

L-Theanine by Klaire Labs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Theanine by Klaire Labs does interact with certain medications, primarily through its potential to lower blood pressure and affect the central nervous system.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) — theanine may enhance their effects and lower your blood pressure further than intended, which is a Moderate-level interaction. Animal studies show theanine can reduce blood pressure; combined with antihypertensive drugs, this additive effect could be clinically meaningful.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Theanine also has Minor interactions with two other drug categories. It may add to the sedative effects of central nervous system depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, certain pain relievers, anti-anxiety medications), though the real-world significance of this isn't certain.
Separately, studies on theanine's effect on serotonin levels conflict — some show it may raise serotonin, others suggest it may lower it — but no cases of serotonin syndrome or serotonin-related side effects have been reported from theanine itself.
Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications. If you take any blood pressure medication, sleep aid, sedative, or serotonergic drug (like an antidepressant), check your specific medications with the tool on this page before you start theanine.

For each ingredient in L-Theanine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
