Maitake Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Maitake against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Maitake by Real Mushrooms
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Maitake Mushroom extract, which delivers beta-glucans. Beta-glucans are compounds found naturally in mushroom cell walls that your immune system and digestive system can recognize and respond to.
The capsule also contains a few inert ingredients — hypromellose, silicon dioxide, microcrystalline cellulose, and stearic acid — which help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Not established
Beta-glucans from maitake are rated Likely Effective for dyslipidemia (high cholesterol or abnormal blood fats) and coronary heart disease. That means there's solid clinical evidence they can help with those conditions.
We hold no effectiveness data in our files for other potential uses of this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-glucans from food sources are generally well tolerated. When taken as concentrated supplements, though, the long-term safety picture is less clear, so it's wise to use caution.
The most commonly reported side effect in trials was mild skin reactions when beta-glucans cream was applied topically; these were self-limiting. One child in a high-dose clinical trial developed temporary liver enzyme elevations.
There isn't enough safety data on supplement doses during breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're nursing or planning to.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check your medications for blood pressure drugs and immunosuppressants. Beta-glucans in this supplement may lower blood pressure further or interfere with drugs meant to suppress your immune system.
If you're on either type of medication, run it through the checker below.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Maitake may be worth considering if you're interested in supporting cholesterol or heart health and you don't take blood pressure or immunosuppressant medications. If you do take either of those types of drugs, check with your pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real.

Maitake by Real Mushrooms Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Maitake by Real Mushrooms contains beta-glucans, which are documented to interact with two medication types.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressant drugs (medications that dampen your immune system). Beta-glucans appear to stimulate immune activity, which could theoretically work against what these drugs are trying to do — this is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beta-glucans may also lower blood pressure in some people, so combining them with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications) carries a Moderate risk of your pressure dropping too far. Altogether, these interactions span 287 individual medications.
Before you start this product, run a check on your exact medications using the search tool below — especially if you take anything for blood pressure or to suppress your immune system. We hold no interaction data for the maitake mushroom extract container itself.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that maitake mushroom can lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is limited evidence that maitake mushroom may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
In a case report, a patient previously stabilized on warfarin developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) of 5.1 after taking maitake mushroom (Grifron-Pro Maitake D-Fraction) 1 drop/kg daily in three divided doses for one week. The elevated INR resolved after holding warfarin for two days, then reducing the dose by 11%. It is thought that the beta-glucan constituent of maitake mushroom might cause warfarin dissociation from proteins, resulting in increased free warfarin levels and increased warfarin effects.
