The evidence for most uses in this product is not established in our data. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows possibly effective ratings for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections. For most other conditions listed in the individual strain studies — such as allergies, asthma, colds, and constipation — the evidence is rated insufficient to make a clear call.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotic strains are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, because they contain live organisms, caution is warranted for people with severely weakened immune systems, critical illness, indwelling catheters, or recent surgery — there are rare documented cases of bacterial infection (bacteremia or sepsis) in these high-risk groups.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort have been reported rarely. For Bifidobacterium longum, pregnancy is rated possibly safe; for Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, pregnancy is also rated possibly safe.
Data on lactation is limited for most strains — check with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're breastfeeding.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus gasseri (SD-5585)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus gasseri with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. gasseri.
Lactobacillus gasseri preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. gasseri preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum (SD-5588)
