Karuna's Mixed Carotenoids contains 6 active carotenoid ingredients: cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, lycopene, lutein, natural alpha-carotene, and natural beta-carotene. These are plant pigments your body can convert into vitamin A or use directly to protect your eyes and tissues from oxidative damage.
The capsule itself is vegetarian, and the product also contains stearate and cellulose as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for this blend is mixed. Zeaxanthin and lutein are both possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss in older adults.
Lycopene is possibly effective for prostate cancer, though it's possibly ineffective for bladder cancer and diabetes. Beta-carotene is effective for vitamin A deficiency and possibly effective for oral leukoplakia, aging skin, and measles.
The evidence for other claimed uses — like cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, and various cancers — is insufficient to rate them. In short, the strongest case for this product is eye health in aging.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein and lycopene from food are considered safe, and supplement doses are generally well tolerated. Beta-carotene is safe at recommended amounts, but high doses can be toxic because it builds up in your body over time — watch for fatigue, dry skin, and hair loss if you're taking large amounts long-term.
Lycopene supplements may cause gastrointestinal side effects like diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal bloating in some people. During pregnancy, supplement doses of lycopene and beta-carotene are not well studied — high-dose beta-carotene (especially as retinol) carries a caution for birth defects.
During breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data on concentrated zeaxanthin and lycopene supplements. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.

Zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you're on antidiabetes drugs. Lycopene may theoretically raise bleeding risk with blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs.
Beta-carotene also interacts with drugs that damage the liver, warfarin specifically, and tetracycline antibiotics — high doses of beta-carotene combined with these could raise the risk of liver damage, bleeding, or a serious condition called pseudotumor cerebri (swelling in the brain from high pressure).
Lutein has no known interactions documented in our data. Cryptoxanthin and natural alpha-carotene could not be checked — we hold no interaction data for them.

Retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives, could have additive toxic effects when taken with vitamin A supplements.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking high doses of vitamin A in combination with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver disease.
The tolerable upper intake level (UL) is the highest level of intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects. Doses of vitamin A above the UL can cause hepatotoxicity, ranging from elevated liver enzymes to liver failure.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, taking tetracycline antibiotics with high doses of vitamin A can increase the risk of pseudotumor cerebri.
Benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) can occur with tetracyclines and with acute or chronic vitamin A toxicity. Case reports suggest that taking tetracyclines and vitamin A concurrently can increase the risk of this condition. Avoid high doses of vitamin A in people taking tetracyclines chronically.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, high doses of vitamin A could increase the risk of bleeding with warfarin.
Vitamin A toxicity is associated with hemorrhage and hypoprothrombinemia, possibly due to vitamin K antagonism. Advise patients taking warfarin to avoid doses of vitamin A above the tolerable upper intake level of 10,000 IU/day for adults.
Lycopene
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking lycopene with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research shows that lycopene has antiplatelet effects.
Zeaxanthin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
