Organic Holy Basil Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Organic Holy Basil against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: holy basil, a plant used traditionally for anxiety and stress. The capsules also contain cellulose as an inactive ingredient (a binder and filler).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for holy basil isn't established in our data. The product is marketed for conditions like generalized anxiety, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, and diabetes, but our research summaries show insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for any of these uses.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the studies we have aren't robust enough to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects from oral use are loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants experienced these.
The safety data advise against using it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, as animal studies raise concerns and human safety isn't established.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check with your pharmacist before starting this product if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (moderate interaction risk), diabetes medications (moderate risk), or pentobarbital or other sedatives (moderate risk for increased sedation). No interactions are documented for other ingredients in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're thinking about holy basil for anxiety or another condition, talk with your pharmacist first — especially if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedatives. The evidence for what it does isn't clear yet.
It's generally well tolerated short-term, but avoid it if you're pregnant or nursing.

Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Organic Holy Basil by Herbally Grounded contains one active ingredient — holy basil — which does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel). Animal research suggests holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, which could raise your bleeding risk if you're on these medications, though we don't have human data to confirm it happens the same way in people.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check if you take diabetes medications. Small studies show holy basil can lower blood sugar, so combining it with diabetes drugs could theoretically push your blood sugar too low (hypoglycemia).
Additionally, if you're on pentobarbital (a barbiturate sedative), holy basil might boost its sedative effects — again, animal data suggests this, but human evidence is limited.
Alternately, our data holds no information about interactions with other sedatives or barbiturates beyond pentobarbital. Use the medication checker below with your exact prescriptions to be sure.
Altogether, these interactions span 211 individual medications.
