Probiotic 55 Billion contains 11 active ingredients, most of them beneficial live bacteria (probiotics). Five of them — Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium breve, and Bifidobacterium bifidum — are well characterized and have been studied for their potential roles in digestive and immune health.
The other bacterial strains (Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, and Lactobacillus salivarius) are also included. The formula also contains fructooligosaccharide, a plant-based fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria.
The inactive ingredients are stearic acid, sodium alginate, and an aqueous enteric coating — the coating is designed to help the capsule survive stomach acid and deliver the organisms intact to the intestines.
Does it work?

The evidence for this product is mixed and ingredient-dependent. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum each show possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and are also possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea — so this product might help if you're taking antibiotics.
L. acidophilus is possibly effective for bacterial vaginosis and Helicobacter pylori infection as well. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for respiratory tract infections.
For most other conditions, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate — meaning studies haven't yet established whether these ingredients work. Fructooligosaccharide's effectiveness for constipation, diabetes, high cholesterol, and other conditions is also insufficient in the data we have.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The checked probiotics in this product — Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium breve, and Bifidobacterium bifidum — are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, there is some medical caution: these are live organisms, and in very rare cases, they've been isolated in serious infections like bacteremia or sepsis, mostly in people who were critically ill or severely immunocompromised at the time.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea have been reported but are uncommon. Fructooligosaccharide can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and flatulence, though studies show these are generally mild at doses under 10 grams daily.
For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are rated possibly safe; Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and Bifidobacterium breve are rated possibly safe for pregnancy and lactation combined, though safety data are limited. Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
