Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by CVS Health
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy
Probiotic is a dietary supplement by CVS Health with 10 active ingredients. Its ingredients are commonly taken for digestive health and regularity, diarrhea (including antibiotic-related), irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) symptoms.Based on those ingredients, 182 medications have a known interaction with it, the most serious rated moderate. The ingredients most likely to interact are Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus acidophilus. Use the checker below to test your specific medication, or read the full HelloPharmacist Interaction Report.

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic by CVS Health
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
CVS Health Probiotic contains 10 active ingredients—all live bacterial strains chosen for digestive and immune support. The lineup includes Bifidobacterium species (bifidum, breve, and longum), Lactobacillus species (acidophilus, helveticus, casei, and rhamnosus), plus Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus.
These are grouped together in a proprietary blend on the label. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients like maltodextrin, starch, inulin, and a capsule shell (hypromellose), plus small amounts of magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide, and ascorbic acid as processing aids.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for these probiotics is mixed and incomplete. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows "Possibly Effective" for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is rated "Possibly Effective" for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections. For most other conditions listed—including allergic rhinitis, anxiety, cognitive decline, asthma, and depression—the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether the product works.
The data simply isn't robust enough yet to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though side effects are possible. Bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and mild gastrointestinal upset have been reported with probiotic use overall, though these particular side effects haven't been consistently tied to any single ingredient here.
Rare cases of bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream) and sepsis have occurred, but almost exclusively in critically ill or premature infants, or in adults with weakened immune systems or central lines—not in healthy people taking probiotics by mouth. One case of vomiting and fever was reported in a child taking B. bifidum with another probiotic, though it's unclear whether the probiotics caused it.
For pregnancy, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Streptococcus thermophilus are each rated "Possibly Safe." Bifidobacterium longum is also rated "Possibly Safe" in pregnancy and lactation. Data on Bifidobacterium breve and Lactobacillus helveticus during pregnancy and lactation isn't on file.
Because safety evidence is limited overall, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any antibiotic drugs—they're the documented interaction here across all five checked bacterial strains. Antibiotics can reduce how well this probiotic works by killing its live organisms, so you'll want to separate when you take them.
The exact timing and spacing should come from your own healthcare provider.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or certain infections, Lactobacillus acidophilus in this blend may be worth trying—the evidence suggests it could help. If you take antibiotics, you'll need to space them apart from this product; your doctor or pharmacist can tell you the right timing.
Anyone with a weakened immune system should check with their healthcare provider first. For most other uses, evidence isn't established yet, so discuss your reason for taking it with your own doctor or pharmacist.

Probiotic by CVS Health Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
CVS Health Probiotic interacts with antibiotic drugs through five of its bacterial ingredients: Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus helveticus.
All five pose a Moderate interaction risk — because these probiotics contain living organisms, taking them at the same time as antibiotics may allow the antibiotics to kill a significant number of the probiotic bacteria, reducing the product's effectiveness.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although we could not check three ingredients (Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactococcus lactis, and Lactobacillus plantarum), the five we did review all show the same antibiotic concern. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
The solution is straightforward: separate doses. If you're taking an antibiotic, ask your doctor or pharmacist how long to wait before and after finishing it before you start or resume this probiotic.
One ingredient we could check—Streptococcus thermophilus—shows no documented interactions. To confirm your specific medications won't be affected, use the interaction checker on this page.

Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium breve
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
