Health Plus Probiotic Fiber contains 14 ingredients: inulin (a soluble fiber), a proprietary blend of live probiotic bacteria including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus coagulans, and Bifidobacterium longum/lactis, a prebiotic fiber blend with FOS (fructooligosaccharides), and Streptococcus boulardii. The inactive ingredients are gelatin, cellulose, and maltodextrin.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Inulin is possibly effective for obesity, constipation, and diabetes, though evidence for its blood-sugar effects remains unclear. For NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease) and iron deficiency anemia, the evidence isn't established.
Among the probiotics, Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for IBS, Helicobacter pylori, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections.
Bacillus coagulans (Bifidobacterium coagulans) is possibly effective for constipation and IBS. Streptococcus thermophilus shows insufficient evidence for all tracked conditions.
Several other probiotic strains are also included, but effectiveness data we hold is insufficient or not rated for most.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Inulin is generally well tolerated but often causes gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and cramping, especially at doses over 30 grams; rare cases of anaphylaxis have occurred. The probiotic ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though live organisms theoretically pose infection risk in severely ill or immunocompromised patients (those with weakened immune systems, central lines, or preterm infants).
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium species, and Streptococcus thermophilus may cause mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, or vomiting, though these are uncommon. Bacillus subtilis is generally well tolerated but rare cases of bacteremia have occurred with high consumption of fermented products containing Bacillus subtilis var. natto, typically in immunocompromised individuals.
Pregnancy safety: inulin and most probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus) are possibly safe in pregnancy. Lactation safety data is limited or not on file for most ingredients.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium subtilis
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bacillus subtilis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. subtilis.

Inulin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that inulin improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes; however, it is unclear if it has hypoglycemic effects.
