Probiotic for Digestive Health Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Swanson
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic for Digestive Health against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic for Digestive Health by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This 17-ingredient probiotic blend contains live bacterial cultures — strains of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Streptococcus species — plus FOS (a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria). The actives are: L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, B. lactis, L. bulgaricus, L. salivarius, B. bifidum, FOS, B. breve, S. thermophilus, B. infantis, L. lactis, L. casei, L. brevis, L. helveticus, B. longum, and L. reuteri.
The remaining ingredients are fillers and capsule material (microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is mixed and often thin. L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis; B. bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections; and S. thermophilus and other strains have insufficient evidence to rate for most conditions listed in our data.
For many of the conditions this blend might be marketed for — allergic rhinitis, asthma, anxiety, cognitive decline — the research is not established well enough for us to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These bacterial strains are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The main cautions are for people with very weak immune systems or serious illness — your doctor or pharmacist should weigh the risks and benefits with you.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhea can occur, though they're uncommon. There is a theoretical concern that live probiotic organisms could cause infection in severely ill or immunocompromised patients, though this is rare in otherwise healthy people.
Pregnancy data for most ingredients are limited; the facts indicate L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, S. thermophilus, and B. longum are possibly safe in pregnancy, but for other strains we don't have enough information — talk with your doctor before taking this during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Separate this product from antibiotics by a few hours if possible — antibiotics can kill the live organisms and reduce the probiotic's effectiveness. That's the only moderate interaction documented for the ingredients we could check.
If you take any prescription medication, run it through the checker on this page or confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help if you have IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or certain infections, though the evidence varies by strain. The main interaction to watch for is antibiotics — timing matters, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're taking or about to take antibiotics.
If you're severely ill, immunocompromised, or pregnant, discuss it with your healthcare provider before starting. For most healthy people, it's generally well tolerated.

Probiotic for Digestive Health by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Probiotic for Digestive Health interacts with antibiotics through its L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, B. bifidum, B. breve, L. helveticus, and B. longum content.
The concern is moderate: antibiotics can kill the live organisms in these probiotic strains, reducing their effectiveness. If you take antibiotics, your doctor or pharmacist can advise you on timing — typically separating the two by a few hours helps.

Additionally, several ingredients in this blend — L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, B. lactis, L. salivarius, FOS, B. infantis, L. lactis, L. casei, and L. brevis — we could not check for interactions because we hold no data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
One ingredient, S. thermophilus, was checked and showed no interactions documented in our data. That said, absence of documented interactions is not a guarantee none exist.
