Sheep Sorrel Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Sheep Sorrel against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella) in dried herb liquid extract form. Sorrel is a leafy plant traditionally used for respiratory and other purposes, though current evidence for those uses is limited.
The only other ingredient is the menstruum — the liquid base used to extract and preserve the herb.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for Sheep Sorrel isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for bronchitis, breast cancer, or rhinosinusitis — the conditions it's most commonly associated with.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research either isn't there yet or hasn't reached a clear conclusion. If you're considering it for a specific health concern, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current science actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sheep Sorrel is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but there's a real caveat: it's high in oxalates, minerals that can cause kidney problems in large or concentrated doses. Cases of kidney damage from sorrel consumption have been reported, including one child who developed kidney inflammation after eating wild sorrel.
If you have kidney disease or a history of kidney stones, this product isn't for you. Some people may have allergic reactions — sorrel pollen can trigger allergic rhinitis or asthma in sensitive individuals, and up to 19% of people allergic to weed pollen may react to sorrel too.
When sorrel is combined with other herbs, nausea and an unpleasant aftertaste have been reported. Safety data for medicinal use while breastfeeding is limited, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Sheep Sorrel, check if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel) — sorrel may increase bleeding risk. Also confirm any medications that rely on intestinal absorption with OATP transporters, including the antihistamine fexofenadine (Allegra).
The medication checker on this page can help identify these.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a single-herb extract with several documented drug interactions, especially with blood thinners and allergy medications. The oxalate content makes it risky if you have kidney concerns.
Check your exact medications with the tool on this page before you start, and talk with your pharmacist — especially if you take a blood thinner or fexofenadine.

Sheep Sorrel by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sheep Sorrel by Herbal Terra is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with several types of medications.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin or warfarin). Sorrel may add to their blood-thinning effects and increase your bleeding risk, though this has only been seen in lab studies, not yet in people.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sorrel also interferes with how your gut absorbs a whole group of medications called OATP substrates — drugs that rely on a transporter protein in your intestines to get into your bloodstream. If sorrel blocks that transporter, these drugs become less effective.
Fexofenadine (Allegra), the antihistamine, is one specific example: sorrel may reduce how much of it your body actually absorbs. Altogether, these interactions span 169 individual medications.
Before you start this product, use the medication checker on this page to run through everything you take — especially if you're on a blood thinner, allergy medication, or any drug that relies on intestinal absorption.

certified organic Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella) dried herb liquid extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, sorrel might cause additive effects and side effects when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro, sorrel has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Fexofenadine (Allegra)
Sorrel might reduce the effectiveness of fexofenadine by reducing its absorption from the gut.
In vitro research shows that an ethanol extract of sorrel inhibits organic anion-transporting polypeptide 1A2 (OATP1A2), which transports fexofenadine from the intestine into cells. In rats, concomitant administration of sorrel extract with fexofenadine reduces oral absorption of fexofenadine and the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC).
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Sorrel might reduce the effectiveness of OATP substrates by reducing their absorption from the gut.
In vitro research shows that sorrel inhibits OATP1A2. Theoretically it may inhibit other OATPs. The OATPs are expressed in the small intestine and liver and transport drugs into cells. Inhibition of OATP may reduce the bioavailability of oral drugs that are substrates of OATP.
