HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Shilajit Extract 400 mg by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: shilajit extract, 400 mg per capsule. Shilajit is a mineral-rich substance that comes from high-altitude rock deposits.
The capsule itself also contains inactive ingredients — hypromellose, maltodextrin, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica — which are fillers and binders that help form and preserve the capsule.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for shilajit isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), or osteopenia (low bone density).
If you're considering shilajit for any of these reasons, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current science actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Shilajit is generally well tolerated, though side effects are rare. One case of severe allergic reaction — including hives and anaphylaxis requiring emergency treatment — was reported in a woman who increased her dose from 400 mg to 800 mg; headache has also been reported rarely in clinical research.
The safety data advises against shilajit during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe at those times. One important caution: unpurified shilajit products may contain heavy metals or other contaminants.
Use only purified, tested brands like this one.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check any antidiabetes drug you're taking — medications like metformin, insulin, sulfonylureas, or other blood-sugar-lowering pills. Shilajit may enhance how well they work, which raises your risk of low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Shilajit may be worth trying if you're interested in its traditional uses, but the evidence is still limited. If you take any medication for blood sugar, check it with us first — shilajit can strengthen that effect.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and always buy purified products from brands you trust.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Taking shilajit with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
